At times even the ECM can’t detect the misfire so relying on scan tool data is
not always the solution. Thompson Auto Labs have developed a proven system that

Finally, ACE software opens another view into the combustion chamber and
provides the answers that you need. To find a misfire, just follow these
four steps:

3. Connect one lead to an ignition reference for #1 cylinder and connect the other lead to the oxygen sensor of the bank you want to test or to the FirstLook ™ sensor in the tailpipe.

ACE software analyzes the exhaust train to identify the low-pressure pulse from the exhaust stroke of a misfiring cylinder driven by the unconsumed oxygen of a misfire. ACE can also sense the high frequency dip in voltage of an oxygen sensor signal when a cylindermisfires, or partially misfires.
Updates can be downloaded from the internet at startup.
What
you needACE Misfire does not require any complicated equipment: an A/D converter to digitize the exhaust train, an inductive pick-up, and a FirstLook Diagnostic Sensor. All of these are included in the ACE Detective Kit .
